Frequently asked questions

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 Exam FAQs

Find clear answers about exam prices, formats, timing, results and booking.

Is Functional Skills Maths Level 2 equivalent to GCSE Maths?

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is widely recognised as comparable to GCSE Maths grade 4/C for many jobs, apprenticeships and education routes. However, it is a separate qualification with a different syllabus and assessment. Before booking, confirm acceptance and read our GCSE Maths equivalent comparison.

How much does the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 exam cost?

The remotely invigilated online Maths exam costs £180 per attempt, while the London centre-based exam costs £110. Both prices include registration, exam entry, marking, your result and a digital certificate after passing. Each new attempt requires a separate booking and payment.

Can I take the exam online from home?

Yes. You can take the Functional Skills Maths Level 2 exam online from a suitable private room. Weekday sessions are available at 8:00am, 11:30am and 4:00pm. You need a compatible computer, reliable internet, camera, microphone and valid photographic identification, and you must complete the required system checks before exam day.

Where is the London exam centre?

The London examination centre is at 362 Essex Road, Islington, London, N1 3PD. It is accessible from Essex Road, Highbury & Islington and Angel stations, with several nearby bus routes. Review the available dates and reserve your place through the centre-based Maths exam booking page.

When are the London exams held?

Centre-based Functional Skills Maths Level 2 exams are normally held every Wednesday and Saturday at 11:00am. Candidates should arrive at least 30 minutes early with their original valid photographic identification. Dates can fill, so check the current schedule and secure your preferred session through the London Maths exam page.

How long does the exam take?

The complete assessment lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes and contains two sections. The non-calculator section lasts 25 minutes and contributes 25% of the marks, while the calculator section lasts 1 hour and 20 minutes and contributes 75%. Candidates booking either the online exam or centre-based exam complete the same qualification structure.

Can I use a calculator?

You may use a calculator only during the 80-minute calculator section, which represents 75% of the assessment. A calculator is not permitted during the first 25-minute section. Practising both methods is important, and the online Functional Skills Maths course can help you prepare for calculator and non-calculator questions before the exam.

What is the pass mark?

The indicative pass mark is approximately 31 marks out of 60, which is around 52%. This is not a permanently fixed threshold and may change when new papers are introduced or awarding decisions are made. Your marks from both sections are combined, and the final result is Pass or Fail. Preparation through the Maths Level 2 course can help you build confidence across the full curriculum.

How quickly will I receive my result?

Results commonly arrive within one week after the assessment, but marking can take up to 20 working days and, in exceptional circumstances, up to 32 working days. These timeframes apply to both online Maths exams and London centre-based exams. Avoid making fixed application plans until your official result has been issued.

Is a digital certificate included?

Yes. After passing, a digital certificate is included in the exam price and can be used as formal evidence of your Functional Skills Maths Level 2 achievement. A printed certificate can also be posted within the UK for £10 and may take additional time to arrive. Certificate arrangements apply whether you choose the online exam or the London centre-based format.

What identification do I need?

You must present original, valid photographic identification, and the personal details entered during booking must match it exactly. Centre-based candidates cannot use digital images, photocopies or printed copies. Online candidates also complete identity and room checks before starting. Review these requirements carefully before booking an online Maths exam.

What happens if I do not pass?

If your result is Fail, you will normally need to purchase and book another exam attempt because the original fee does not include a free resit. Before rebooking, review the topics that caused difficulty and allow enough preparation time. You can strengthen weaker areas with the online Functional Skills Maths course, then select a new online or centre-based examination date.

Can I book the exam without purchasing a course?

Yes. Exam-only booking is available when you are already prepared and do not require tuition. You can book either the online exam for £180 or the London centre exam for £110. Check that Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is accepted for your intended purpose and review the exam rules before paying.

Can I add a preparation course?

Yes. The online Functional Skills Maths Level 2 course is available for £150 as a standalone purchase or £75 when added to an exam booking. The course covers the Level 2 curriculum and provides structured preparation before your assessment. Adding it to either exam format saves £75 compared with purchasing the course separately.

How do I book?

First choose between the online Maths exam and the London centre-based exam. Select an available date, enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your identification and complete the secure payment. Read the cancellation, rescheduling, identification and technical requirements before confirming your purchase.
